Nutrition Is An Important Part Of Senior Living

Good nutrition, including a diet that is low in saturated fats and contains five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day is vital in maintaining good health. Fruits and vegetables (with the exception of avocados, olives and coconut) are naturally low in fat. A healthy diet can also help to prevent a number of other ailments that frequently affect older individuals. For example, making sure that you get enough calcium can slow the weakening of bones that occurs with age, thereby reducing the risk of fractures or breaks. Making sure you drink enough water and consume adequate amounts of fiber can help prevent constipation.

As you age you may notice a loss of appetite. Decreased appetite may result from a slower metabolism rate. As people age, most use less energy, or calories, than they did in younger years. That’s because many older adults live less active lifestyles. By age 75, about one in three men and one in two women do not engage in any physical activity. Being more active can improve the appetite, and exercise (even moderate exercise like walking) provides a variety of health benefits.

Regular physical activity greatly reduces a person’s risk from dying of heart disease, and decreases the risk for colon cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Physical activity also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and can decrease the need for hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications. Many elderly people have great access to exercise programs at their local recreational and assisted adult living communities.

Finally, physical activity does not need to be strenuous to be beneficial; people of all ages benefit from moderate physical activity. Before starting an exercise program, you should consult with your physician. It’s important to start slowly and increase your activity gradually. The trick is to find activities you truly enjoy. This way, you’ll actually look forward to your daily routine. After a few weeks, it may even become habit-forming.

Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious foods and being physically active can prevent or control the devastating effects of many of the nation’s leading causes of death regardless of one’s age.

Creatine, The Muscle Builder

The intake of Creatine increases the level of energy to the muscle cells with the replenishment of ATP by creatine phosphate. The recovery time after the workout is reduced. There is an increase in energy and muscle mass. It was believed earlier that Creatine creates stress on or bloating of kidneys. Creatine is marketed in many forms such as creatine monohydrate and creatine ester. Their price and dosage varies.

Creatine supplements are found to increase the performance in high intensity athletics. Skeletal muscles get energy from creatine. It was in 1912 that the researchers in Harvard University found out that creatine intake augmented the muscles’ creatine content. During the 1920s scientists discovered that larger intake of creatine increased intramuscular storage of creatine, creatine had an important in the metabolism of skeletal muscles, and vertebrates were the source of the natural production of creatine. They also discovered creatine phosphate. It was also observed later that the physical performance. Of sportspersons and athletes was enhanced with intake of creatine.

Creatine supplements began to be commercialized only from 1993 and became available in the market. Experimental and Applied Sciences (EAS) of Britain introduced Phosphagen, the first creatine product to be launched. It was discovered that creatine muscle performance as well as stores increased with the consumption of high glycemic carbohydrates with creatine. Cell-Tech was the first creatine-carbohydrate-alpha lipoic acid supplement to be launched. It was introduced by MuscleTech Research and Development. Intake of Alpha lipoic acid increased the levels of muscle phosphocreatine as well as total muscle creatine concentrations. Creatine ethyl ester supplements were introduced first in 2004. The most popular forms of creatine are the creatine monohydrate and creatine ethyl ester-based supplements. These are offered as separate products or in combined form. It has been reported by researchers that creatine monohydrate provides more creatine than creatine ethyl ester. These are consumed in the form of powder that is mixed into a drink or as caplet or capsule. There are many products in the market such as the BSN CellMass.

There was an increase of 20 percent in the level of phosphocreatine in the muscles when creatine was ingested. Creatine increases the activity of satellite cells that makes possible the muscle hypertrophy. Most governing sport authorities do not list creatine in their banned list as its consumption is not equated with doping. Considered to be safe both in short and long term use, creatine is suggested not to be consumed by those ailing from renal diseases.

Are You Overweight

The question of the day is: Are you overweight? Or as comedienne Artie Lange puts it, “Too Fat To Fish?”

There’s no need to go over the medical specifics, because it’s just common sense. People know when they’re hefting around too much flab. I know it, and my friends all seem to know it too from talking to them.

There are signs.

Taking more than 5 seconds to button up pants.

Your shirt is getting tight in the collar.

You start altering your golf swing.

You start going back to the buffet a third time.

Three flights of stairs leave you winded.

It adds up. And I could go on from here. Like when you stop suddenly, your arms keep jiggling.

We all need to start getting leaner, and we know it. We just have to do a little planning.

First on the plan is to get on pharmaceutical grade fish oil and stay on it. Which is easy, a couple capsules a couple times per day.

You’ll see the results in 60 days, but the internal benefits start immediately – as should YOU.

Then you start altering your diet in small steps. A great way to start is by replacing the soda in your diet, including diet soda, with water. My friend made this change alone, as well as beginning to take pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and melted off 14 pounds in 8 weeks.

Six more pounds came off when he replaced his lunch burgers with salads twice a week.

He limited his ice cream intake to 4 ounces per day, and lost even more weight.

His exercise program consisted of hill walking in the beginning, and then 6 hill sprints per day, which took him about 15 minutes.

He looks 10 years younger today and is 35 pounds lighter.

He didn’t make any radical changes, or totally eliminate anything from his diet, other than soda. And he doesn’t miss it.

In fact, on a business trip he forgot to pack his fish oil. That, he felt immediately. After four days without a dose, he knew next time he’d just have some fish oil fedexed to him – it was that important.

I’ve heard that same story over and over. Once you get your health levels up, you’ll become much more sensitive to a detour. And that’s a good thing.

CAUSES OF LOW BACK & LEG PAIN

Low back pain doesn't happen overnight and once understood, can resolve quicker than you realize. We have to look at our lifestyle, nutrition, how we think & feel, etc. to unravel the condition. You could take a pain reliever but still the underlying imbalance will be there after the relief is gone. The key word for low back pain is DEFICIENCY.

Causative Setting: Holistically speaking, our lifestyle and ability to manage it appears to be overstressing most of us whereas our circulatory systems are tight and obstructing thus preventing nutrients to nourish us and elimination of toxins. Our food choices in America are too rich, filled with processed, empty nutrients, preservatives, pesticides, hormones, unless you know the verifiable source. This generation endures more stress, changes and emotions keeping us up later and/or deep sleep is not achieved. The result is we lack the necessary energy or life force to be our best. This further makes us irritable in our relationships which worsens all the scenarios described before.

As we break down our energy, immunity and support, our self image and esteem parallels our internal organs ability to weather the challenge. In particular our kidneys and adrenals become weakened or deficient requiring us to take back what has been given up to regain our essence, vitality, our quality of life.

Initially, winning strategies in lifestyle, diet and rest need to be re-constructed. This article was wriiten to suggest successful alternatives enabling the reader to rapidly acquire anti-aging versus aging strategies.

The source of deficiency stems from 4 main areas:

  • LEFT KIDNEY DEFICIENCY
  • RIGHT KIDNEY DEFICIENCY
  • KIDNEY ENERGY DEFICIENCY
  • EXTREME CHRONIC FATIGUE

FOOD THERAPY: LOW BACK PAIN

This issue may involve not only low back pain but also sciatic pain complicated by other syndromes such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, Epstein Barr, etc. Below are the 4 main causes of pain in the low back and leg weakness.

There are several categories based on Chinese medicine nutrition and Traditional Chinese herbs that support and correct low back pain:

Secrets of Longevity-Pillars of Life

The Secrets of Longevity have been a quest by many people for aeons of time. There are pockets of the world’s population where people live much longer than the longevity nations (China, Japan, Korea) such as the Hunzas in the Himalayas, the Vilcambas in the Andes, the Abkhasians and Georgians on the Black Sea, the East Indian Todas and the Yucatan Indians. Researchers tracking cultures living the longest have found that its not unusual for these peoples to live a life of quality. Work and play beyond 80 years and beyond is typical. A majority, attain 100 years remaining active and honored by all they live with. Here are the longevity habits of these people.

THE 7 PILLARS TO A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE

  1. SLEEP

Sleep more, age less…Sleep is not an optional activity. It is as essential to life as water and food and is essential for a strong immune system.

Any book dedicated to the topic of aging will cite the necessity for enough sleep, which is 7-9 hours.

There is a strong relationship between deep sleep and the release of Growth Hormone. It is during sleep that adults secrete the greatest amount of HGH.

Sleep disturbances usually stem from 1) deficient adrenals and kidneys (need energy to sleep), 2) high blood pressure spike at 3AM, 3) damp-obstruction in the throat (blocks airways) snoring, semi-wakefulness , 4) excess heat rising from the liver which causes alert status, head heat and headache and 5) excess urination which wakes the person thus not allowing deep REM sleep

2. STRESS REDUCTION

You cannot deny the health benefits of stress reduction.

Stress reduction can go a long way in reducing symptoms of aging along with the onset of disease.

Dr. Paul E. Lemanski (Albany Medical College( writes, ‘Stress causes the release of ‘fight or flight’ hormones which increase blood flow to our large muscles, increase our heart rate, respirations and blood pressure, and decreases blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract including the saliva glands.

Sleep disturbances usually stem from 1) high blood pressure spiking at 3AM,  2) Deficient adrenals and kidneys (need energy to sleep), 3)

3. EXERCISE

In ’Successful Aging’ (1998) a study on aging in America, which had begin in 1987, showed that almost all healthy seniors had been physically active throughout their life.

Dr. Andrew Weil, a well-known proponent of alternative or complementary medicine and the author of, ‘Healthy Aging’, supports the idea that up until modern times, humans have almost always been physically active, simply by surviving off the land. Today we work off computers. Bottom line is that we need some form of daily exercise. Yes, walking counts, if done briskly.

4. NUTRITION

We all know the importance of good nutrition and a balanced diet. But which diet? The best history of longevity is held by the Hunzakuts of the Pakastani Himalayas. The majority of the people live over 100. They practice these health pillars, exceptionally, and more. They eat 3/5 the calories as those in industrialized society, drink 40 cups of water with chunks of Himalyan mineral salt daily, work 12 hours a day then play, take long 20 mile treks or hike up the mountin side, meditate many times in the day, etc.  Their diet consists of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and a little goat or Yak meat every couple of weeks, drink home made “Pani” wine (weak) and goat milk. Their great secret is that they don’t waste their waste. They put all animal and human elimination and garbage back into the soil as compared to industrial society where all all elimination goes down the drain to public works depts. and dumped in sanitation pits. The problem here is that our soil is depleted and their soil and crop can defend itself without the use of pesticide and nutrients.

5. WATER

Like that of nutrition, lots can be said and studies can be cited all day long as to which type of water is best for us. One thing is for sure however. Drinking enough water on a daily basis is essential for proper elimination and detoxification. I have found that water in plastic containers is very acidic which results in an inflammatory state. Water from the city (Houston) is in healthy ranges but you can smell the excess chlorine. I suggest putting a filter on the tap and shower head. Less acid and chlorine.

6. SUPPLEMENTATION

Today it is becoming very hard to argue against proper supplementation in order to maintain health due to our poor soil nutrition. However, if one were to source natural crop supplementation, they would be better off. This is hard to come by because it takes extra knowledge to provide for yourself and you need to take the time to grow your crop. But, if you are are desiring longevity then I would begin the search for an urban community garden or acquire land to produce yourself.

Many well-respected scientists, researchers, and medical professionals have discovered the relationship between mineral deficiencies and a wide variety of health conditions, which afflict the human body.

Since our soil is mineral deficient, effective supplementation based on plant nutrients is crucial. Longevity herbal is a beneficial natural source of highly mineralized, vitaminized food. Besides the health engendering alkalods contained there are dense nutrients which provides the human body the potential for correction. The key is the knowledge of the practitioner and chooser of the herbs essential for balance to be achieved.

7. POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE

In the work called “The Secret” and many studies before, a positive belief in oneself, one’s vision, having supportive people to hold you to the task and believing in you, recognizing when you are off-course and positively course correcting will greatly minimize stress, affect others to be positive and reflect back positivity.

There are, of course, other pillars to support a long and healthy life, but these are what we consider the most fundamental. More in-depth information can be found at “Secrets of Longevity“

ALLERGY: NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENT

This is a discussion of the primary issues involved with Allergies and the strategies that you have to resolve to completely correct the underlying physical imbalance. Traditional Chinese herbs and medicine and nutrition are spelled out in detail to move quickly from the inflamed state or to compliment other remedies.

Uncomplicated Understanding & Simple Solutions for Allergies

The primary reason for an allergy is due to an excess ingestion of food, contaminated air, water or a deficiency in the body due to lack of mineral, vitamin and physical energy. The deficiency and excess conditions result in toxicity which can spread from one organ to the next, disrupting organ function and homeostasis or general balance.

The human body is always working on maintaining balance and involves every organ and system to maintain that harmony. For instance, if the lungs and digestion are not able to manage seasonal pollens, mold and microbes then:

  • the nasal passages will excessively drain to clear out the overflowing toxins.
  • The lungs – bronchi – trachea produce mucus, all to assist the cleansing of excess.
  • liver function may become overtaxed and over-heated thus drying out mucus making it difficult to clear mucus obstruction and decreasing immune function

There are many examples of allergic reaction that are an extension of an excess/deficient constitution type. The purpose of this lens is to comprensively, present respiratory allergy and list more bonafide solutions that are finally corrective. Most allergic conditions take years to arrive. Cutting out so called, non-perfoming organs is irreversible, do not resolve the underlying cause and, many times, prevents the ability of the body to heal itself. Below, you will discover Traditional Chinese herbs and nutrition strategies for improving and alleviating allergic interence with the quality of your life.

ALLERGY NUTRITION

Foods to Increase and Avoid in Your Diet

The foods below are recommended because they alleviate excess mucus production and obstruction in the channels (energy and circulation). Due to this clogging function, disruption occurs in the detoxing organs as wella s the channels for eliminating the excess in food and toxins. Even though the foods below do not contribute allergic reaction, too much of the foods can result in allergy conditions.

  • Foods: bee pollen, honey, citrus seed, protein foods (small amount, often), onions, sprouted wheat, sprouted legumes, sprouted seeds, micro-algae, chlorophyll-rich foods, cereal grasses, liver support foods/herbs,
  • Drinks: Almond milk, Herb teas (no lemon or orange), Pure fruit juices without sugar or additives (dilute 50:50 with water), Roasted grain beverages may be used as coffee substitutes, Seltzer (salt free), Soy milk without corn oil, Spring water in glass bottles
  • Cereals: Oatmeal, Oat bran, Cream of rye, Puffed rice and millet, Diluted apple juice, apple slices, and nuts go well on cereal. Use soymilk that has no corn oil added or almond milk.
  • Grains and flour: Bean flour, Buckwheat flour, 100% buckwheat soba noodles, Cooked whole gains, such as oats, millet, barley, buckwheat groats (kasha), rice macaroni, spelt (flour and pasta), brown rice, amaranth, quinoa, rice, or millet breads (that contain no dairy, eggs, sugar, or wheat), Potato flour, 100% rice cakes, Rice crackers, Rice flour, 100% rye or spelt bread with no wheat, Rye crackers, Soy flour
  • Legumes: Black beans, Chickpeas, Kidney beans, Lentils, Navy beans, Peas, Soybeans, String beans, Tofu, Dried beans should be soaked overnight. Pour off the water and rinse before cooking. Canned beans often contain added sugar or other potential allergens. Some cooked beans packaged in glass jars, and sold at health food stores, contain no sugar.
  • Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds, either raw or roasted, without salt or sugar, Nut butters from health food stores or from fresh ground nuts (such as almond butter, cashew butter, walnut butter, sesame butter, and sesame tahini)
  • Oils: Use cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils (available from health food stores), as they are safer for the heart and blood vessels. Do not use corn oil or “vegetable oil” from an unspecified source, as this is usually corn oil. Flaxseed (edible linseed) oil, Olive oil, Peanut oil, Safflower oil, Sesame oil, Soy oil, Sunflower oil
  • Protein: tuna, salmon, and other Fresh fish, Lamb, Poultry and fowl
  • Vegetables: All vegetables except corn are generally acceptable. Tomatoes sometimes cause problems and should be avoided by susceptible individuals.

AVOID THE FOLLOWING FOOD:

  • Peanuts are a common food allergen and should be avoided, along with peanut butter
  • Canola oil (rapeseed)
  • Lack of dietary changes will yield allergic conditions
  • Excess consumption of food, This variable is determined by the individual’s current detox function.
  • Glucan sensitive foods based on wheat (not every has this issue)
  • Deadly Nightshade plants (tomatoes, egg plant, potatoes) minority suffer from this sensitivity.
  • Sugars
  • Excitotoxins (most sugar replacements except stevia, Agave nectar, etc.)
  • Incomplete foods or Non-whole foods
  • Breads made from flour as opposed to complete whole grain bread

As an individual becomes more toxic or builds up excess obstructive components in the body then the allergic conditions tend to increase unless you reverse the toxic pattern. You have to give your body a break until it finds its equilibrium.

NUTRITION: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE CAUSES & SOLUTIONS

What is happening in America? So many people walking around with high blood pressure (hypertension) and not getting any better. Obviously, this ailment is not understood except to treat the symptoms rather than the underlying problem. Below here are some pervasive stats from the American Heart Association that indicates just how this condition is not improving:

High blood pressure (hypertension) killed 57,356 people in the United States in 2005.

  • About 73.6 million people in the United States age 20 and older have high blood pressure.
  • One in three adults has high blood pressure.
  • Of those people with high blood pressure, 78.7 percent were aware of their condition.
  • Of all people with high blood pressure, 69.1 percent were under current treatment, 45.4 percent had it under control, and 54.6 percent did not have it controlled.
  • The cause of 90-95 percent of the cases of high blood pressure isn’t known; however, high blood pressure is easily detected and usually controllable.
  • From 1995 to 2005 the death rate from high blood pressure increased 25.2 percent, and the actual number of deaths rose 56.4 percent.
  • Non-Hispanic blacks are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure than are non-Hispanic whites.
  • Within the African-American community, those with the highest rates of hypertension, are more likely to be middle aged or older, less educated, overweight or obese, physically inactive, and to have diabetes.
  • In 2005 the death rates per 100,000 population from high blood pressure were 15.8 for white males, 52.1 for black males, 15.1 for white females and 40.3 for black females

As you can see this is a serious epidemic in the U.S. and it seems we are not taking a deserving all out attack on this enemy. This is a more extreme threat than any terrorist attack. This is where the money and research needs to be focussed. Wouldn’t you agree?

It is very clear to see that one contributing cause of the condition is not knowing the origin which is essential to finding its solution.

The UNDERLYING CAUSE

DO YOU HAVE TOXIC BLOOD? HOW DOES THE BLOOD BECOME TOXIC?

When the blood becomes saturated with unfiltered blood then its ability to maintain body systems and organs is compromised. Blood quality determines every cell’s capability to carry out its function. The blood has the potential to nourish or pollute the entire body. As we age, over-stress, ingest a poor diet, etc. blood components can build up unless detoxification is employed or the primary blood filters in the body are supported to do their function.

The liver, spleen, and every circulatory system organ can be involved in an obstructive process that impedes natural blood flow. This results in the body lowering in energy or Qi (Traditional Chinese medicine), high blood pressure, with every body function suffering from poor nutrition and de-oxygenation. No amount of vitamins or minerals can overcome the level of toxicity that develops except through gradual elimination of toxins in the blood. If detoxification happens too quickly, then a crisis can occur where nausea, exhaustion, and further setbacks in the cleansing process. If elimination is allowed to proceed on a gradual improving pace then expulsion is optimized. This requires working with the body as opposed to making physiology conform to a standardized strategy.

If the blood remains toxic for too long then an acidic environment is created. The result is a breakdown of vascular walls. This involves a scarring effect with blood components filling in the damged areas. This build-up complicates the process of cleansing. If the circulatory plumbing is not cleared out then all organs suffer while the aging process speeds up. Its important at this stage that balance is re-established before established damage occurs.

There are different conditions that are involved with causation of toxic build-up. From a Chinese medicine perspective, the body can involve singular or multiple constitutional conditions. The primary (6) body types are:

cold<—————>hot
damp<————->dry
deficient<——–>excess

When the body becomes or specific organ become extreme in one of the constitutional conditions above then toxicity occurs. In order to move the imbalance or over toxicity to a balanced or neutral status, the body or its organ(s) need help to move in the other direction of the continuum.

Additionally, Its very important to discern which constitution is primary so treatment priority can be arrived at before tackling obvious symptoms. Again, the goal of the correction process is to achieve balance or neutral status. That is the mid-point between cold and hot, damp and dry, and deficient and excess. Establishing the center of these continuums brings about optimal health where the symptoms subside, health anchors.

Summary: Excess constitution with heat and dampness characteristics stemming from over-ingestion of rich, greasy, spicy, refined, intoxicating foods. Foods: excess red meat, eggs, cheese, fried foods, salt, excess sweet, refined & stale flour and oil products, chemicals, drugs and acoholic drinks.

When the body becomes overwhelmed by the above foods then the blood, organs and body becomes toxic and malfuctioning. The excess wears the body down into deficiency resulting in conditions of arthritis, tumor, diabetes, etc. The blockages in vasularity produces heat and pressure resulting in the following conditions – high blood pressure, constipation, excess weight, stroke and circulation ailments. The remedy is purging and cleansing.with bitter herbs and foods. Bitter cools and reduces dampness in the body. There may be exceptions which require a seasoned Master herbalist’s (traditional chinese herbs) input.
